The resources provided here include lists of coal-related publications and Web sites, as well as a timeline showing a list of important dates in Illinois coal mining history during the 19th and 20th centuries.  For those hard to find answers, an "Ask the Experts" list provides contact information to persons currently working in the coal industry.

Underground Mining Occupations – Underground mining personnel are highly skilled and well trained in the use of state-of-the art equipment (45MB .avi file).
You may need to install the latest DIVX codec, found here, to view this video.

Surface Mining Occupations – Surface mine personnel use large powerful equipment to mine the coal and reclaim the land. 

Publications -- a listing of publications for both teachers and students. The books are categorized by grade and reading level for easy viewing.  A wide variety of topics such as A Coal Christmas and Mother Jones: An American Life are offered for a fun and informational reading experience.

Questions About Coal -- a listing of Web resources to help you find answers to your questions about coal and coal utilization.

Timeline of the History of Coal Mining -- a listing of important dates in the Illinois coal industry broken into 3 categories:  Mine Disasters, Regulatory History and Landmarks in Illinois Coal Mining History.  The majority of the events have a website listed which serves as a starting point for further investigation.

Ask the Experts List -- a listing of professionals to contact for more information about coal and coal-related issues.

Fossil Forest in the Vermillion Grove mine -- information on the 300 million year old Pennsylvanian Age mire forest located just to the south and west of Danville, Illinois.

Working in an Underground Coal Mine -- illustrates a working day in an underground coal mine.  A glossary and questiosn are included at the end of the story.
