A relaxing getaway to Illinois’ wine country awaits fall travelers
SPRINGFIELD – In recognition of “Illinois Wine Month” in September, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Director Jack Lavin today highlighted Illinois’ growing wine industry, which dates back to the 1700s. The industry contributes nearly $253 million to the state’s economy, and has increased in size nearly six times over the last decade. Lavin encouraged visitors who are interested in learning more about the industry to visit Illinois’ wine country this fall.
“During the month of September, we are recognizing the important contributions of the wine industry in Illinois,” said Lavin. “This industry serves as a positive economic engine in the state – promoting the use of home grown products, creating hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, while also supporting the state’s tourism industry. We look to continue that momentum in the coming year and further our efforts in promoting this industry.”
The Illinois wine industry has exploded in recent years, growing from just 12 wineries in 1997 to 80 today. During this time, the acreage devoted to grape production has grown at a tremendous rate, and today Illinois is consistently among the top 12 wine-producing states. The 80 wineries that span Illinois have also brought with them a host of charming bed and breakfasts and local crafts businesses. The Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association (IGGVA) predicts continued growth in the coming years as more visitors discover the genuine culture of Illinois Wine Country.
“‘Illinois Wine Month’ is held in September during the traditional grape harvesting season when Illinois vintners begin the winemaking process,” explains Megan Pressnall, Director of External Relations for IGGVA. “We invite visitors to experience the many harvest celebrations, grape stomps and wine tastings held all across the state during September.” A full listing of these festivals can be found at http://www.illinoiswine.com/calendar.shtml.
